It is at the end of this video that Collabyrinth’s work begins. Otherwise, the self-awareness “breakthrough” that occurs exists only to further serve persons of privilege–as if everything everybody goes through in the video is for the benefit of the white guy.
The difficult, vulnerable, emotionally draining work of critical analysis, self-awareness and cultural competency isn’t solely or primarily for the benefit of people of privilege. Sure people of privilege benefit by becoming better people. But that is not why historically marginalized person do this work. They do this work in acknowledgement of their own human dignity, as well they should. Marginalized persons don’t exist merely for the betterment of privileged persons.
This is true regardless of the area of social identity in which you are having difficulty. Unless hard work such as this produces better ways of thinking and doing toward the specific marginalized persons within arm’s reach–in this instance, racial practices of justice and equity–the work has completely missed its mark.
