every couple years, i have the distinct privilege of co-hosting a pilgrimage with The Refuge, a wonderful community seeking to practice equity alongside and on behalf of housing insecure neighbors in broomsfield, CO. refuge leaders recruit participants from all over the country. over the years, we’ve visited sites in montgomery, selma, and birmingham, AL, as well as atlanta, GA, patronizing black-owned businesses along the way. it is a time of transformative learning about the particularities of the southern freedom movement’s struggle against the forces of inequity. i am always encouraged hear the ideas participants walk away with for reordering inequitable power dynamics, repairing damage donemore…

At the end of this video is where Collabyrinth’s work begins. Otherwise, the cultural awareness “breakthrough” that occurs in the video exists only in service to white supremacy. The difficult, vulnerable, emotionally draining work of racial analysis, cultural awareness and cultural competency isn’t solely or primarily for the benefit of white people. Sure white people benefit by becoming better people. But people of color do this work in acknowledgement of their own human dignity, as well they should.
